Science behind Indian traditions

Indian history dates back to 6500 BC and so is our tradition which makes it the oldest civilization in the world. Every tradition we follow has a reason behind it which the younger generation misunderstand as superstition. As Indians are mostly God-fearing people and not God-loving, our ancestors made us follow the traditions in the name of God. We must be proud of the treasure our god-fathers left with us.

1.Namaskar
Namste is the way of the Hindus to show their respect and humbleness to the others. When we join our palms in the form of Namaste or Namaskaar, the pressure points located on the tips of our fingers are pressed together which activate them. These are the points that are connected to our eyes, ears and mind; hence increasing their health condition and help us to remember the person we are greeting for a long time.

2. Applying cow dung to walls and floors

Applying Cow Dung is part of cleaning process in Indian villages. In festivals also, after cleaning their houses, rural people implant cow-dung paste on walls and floors for making their houses pure just like urban people make their houses painted for getting the festive feel. The recent researches have proved that Cow dung has the power to kill bacteria which are harmful for humans. Cow Dung is considered good for health. It is very rich in minerals and a great factor of anti-bacterial. It prevents people from various diseases and health issues.Small insects like scorpions, centipedes etc don’t come near to the places which are coated with the paste of Cow dung.Cow Dung acts as a natural mosquito repellent. Mosquitoes stay away from such places. The floor which is coated with cow Dung remains warm in winters and cold in summers. In rural areas, people apply cow-dung on outer walls of their homes and let them dry. Villagers use these dry cow dung cakes as fuel.
3.Hindu ornaments
Normally, we see women wearing gold ornaments on the upper part of the body and silver ornaments on the lower part of the body. According to scientific principles, silver reacts well with the Earth's energy, while gold reacts well with the body's energy and aura. Therefore, silver is worn as anklets or toe rings while gold is used to adorn the upper parts of the body.
Bangles
Normally, the pulse at the wrist is checked for all sorts of ailments. It is believed that the constant friction between the bangles increases the blood circulation level. Furthermore, the electricity passing out through the skin is again reverted to one's own body because of the round-shaped bangles, which does not allow the energy to escape. Bangles have been found at many archaeological sites in India, with the oldest specimen dating back to 2,000 B.C. or earlier. Those early bangles were made of copper, bronze, agate or shell.
Sindoor

It is said that Sindoor activates the pituitary and pineal gland, so that the body and mind of a married women could function better. Applying the red vermilion also activates the chakras in the forehead and on the crown, which attracts cosmic and pranic energy. Sindoor is prepared using mercury, turmeric and lime. Mercury acts as a catalyst that helps ease stress, while keeping the brain active and alert. Mercury also helps in controlling blood pressure, activating sexual drive and libidinal energy.

Bindi

The area between the eyebrows (or the sixth chakra known as the 'Agna') is the seat of concealed wisdom. According to the tantric cult, when, during meditation, the latent energy (kundalini) rises from the base of the spine towards the head; this 'agna' is its probable outlet. The ‘Bindi' between the eyebrows is said to retain energy in the human body and control the various levels of concentration. It is also the central point of the base of the creation itself - symbolising auspiciousness and good fortune.

Toe rings

Indians believe that your "prana" or "life force" must be in balance in order for you to stay healthy. All of the paths of your "prana" run down to your toes, so the idea that a marital symbol could double up as a reproductive enhancer is not a big stretch. Since Toe rings are usually made of Silver, a good conductor, it also absorbs the energy from the polar energies from the earth and passes it to the body, thus refreshing whole body system. The reflexology texts also mention about treating gynecological problems by massaging the second toe. There is also a belief that the wearing of toe rings press on certain nerves that pertain to the reproductive system, keeping it in balance and healthy. By wearing Toe rings in both feet, the menstrual cycle course is regularized with even intervals.

Anklets
A scientific reason given for wearing anklets is that by wearing the anklets, one's energy is not wasted but re-vibrated back to one's own body. Also, since the woman wears a lot of gold jewellery in any Hindu religion, a lot of electrical currents are produced in the body. To counter these currents and to keep the positive energy flowing in the body, the practice of wearing Silver anklets was established.

Earrings

Earrings actually have a very beneficial function. Wearing earrings has an acupuncture-effect on the body.  The father of Western medicine, Hippocrates, wrote about ear piercing and earring wearing around 470 B.C. as a remedy and treatment for menstrual problems. Ancient people treated diseases of feminine Yin organs via earrings in the left ear and diseases of the male Yang organs via the right ear. It is very useful as a means of natural healing. Many healers promote the wearing of magnetic earrings for women who are challenged with obesity, particularly. Why? Because there is a point on the ear known as the Hunger Point, and this vital point can be worked to help a woman if she wishes to change her diet for weight loss purposes.

4. Drinks in silver tumblers

Even if Silver Tumblers don’t look as fancy as porcelain cup and saucer sets they are considered very highly in India. According to Indian custom, one should offer water or hot drinks to guests in silver tumblers. Because the tumbler is made of a precious metal and so it makes the guests feel honored. Also since silver metal is germicidal it helps prevent any infection that the guests might transmit.

5. Tying mango and neem leaves to the door
Neem leaves or Margosa leaves and Mango leaves are hung at the entrance of houses as a tradition. They are done so because Neem acts as an anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-parasitic that prevents infections from affecting the inmates.

6. Meditation under trees
Sitting under a tree meant, access to a lot of fresh oxygen for the brain cells. Fresh oxygen activates the brain cells and results in people thinking wisely and intelligently.Issac Newton came up with the “gravity concept” while he was sitting under an apple tree. Didn’t he?

7. Chanting mantras

Manthras are some written scripts/Vedhas that are chanted during auspicious days and in temples. Aum is a sacred/mystical symbol of Indian religions Viz.., Hinduism, Jainism, Buddhism and Sikhism.Aum is placed at the beginning of most Hindu texts as a sacred incantation to be intoned at the beginning and end of a reading of the Vedas or prior to any prayer or mantra. According to Hinduism Aum (OM) is the origin of creation as mentioned earlier. That is the whole universe was created from vibrations. This was not accepted by the western people until 1960’s. Researchers found that these sounds matches a bird’s sound or an animal’s sound. When the mantra is chanted with the respective rhythm it hinders the hormones and initiates the activity of brain and other internal organs of the human body. This cures the hormone related problems in the human body. It is not necessary that you should chant mantras it is enough to receive the vibrations by hearing it. And thats why Hindus insist mantras should not be chanted wrongly which ends in drastic effects.

8. Applying ash

The most common reason produced by Hindus for this practice is one should always remember that nothing in this world is permanent and even his own (self – who applies it) body would one day end up in a cup of ash. So every human should abolish his selfishness and develop love among every creature in this world.Vibhuti created from sacred fire (Homa) also contains positive energy. This energy prevents our body from the attack of negative energy in our body. This relieves our body from pain and mental stress. The Scientific reason behind the application of this sacred ash on forehead is that it has the ability to absorb the moisture and kill bacteria from the bones and joints. You might have noticed people applying this sacred ash on joints and elbows. This is the reason for the practice of applying the sacred ash on the forehead. It is also applied by people during a fever or illness and the reason might not be known to them or they may think that it brings up the god’s notice to cure them. The actual reason is it absorbs the moisture and kills bacteria present in the forehead. Scientifically it prevents sinus problems and other bacterial disease.

9. Only few castes are allowed to eat non vegetarian food. Why?
In India, Depending on the castes, It is said that a brahmin should not eat any kind of non vegetarian food and people of other castes should eat Non Vegetarian food like chicken , mutton, sea food. According to Indian Customs, if we observe, Basically, who should eat and who should not depends on the occupation of a person but not on their caste. Depending on the work they were categorised earlier and later we people misunderstood the concept and treated it vice versa. If your occupation is of sedentary type and you eat a lot of high-calorie food, you are bound to gain more weight and invite many sorts of diseases related to obesity. The people from a particular caste doing more physical labor were allowed to eat meat. For example, job of a Kshatriya was to fight with enemy and protect the people. So, they required a lot of energy. Hence, Kshatriyas were allowed to eat meat, Non vegetarian food. In the same way, a farmer who requires a lot of physical work was allowed to eat Non veg food. On the other hand, Other castes like Brahmins who do Prayers and intelligent work requiring less hard labor were restricted from eating non vegetarian food according to indian traditions. In the same way, weavers, businessmen were not allowed to eat any kind of non vegetarian. Aside from that, some non vegetarian products like meat and chicken are hard to digest. If you do not have enough body movement or what we say Exercise, it will be hard for you to digest that food and you will be unnecessarily inviting the ailments.

10. Distance between Sun and Earth mentioned in Hanuman chalisa

According to Modren Astronomy and Science , we know that the earth’s orbit around the sun is not a circle and is slightly elliptical. Therefore, the distancebetween the earth and the sun varies throughout the year.At its nearest point on the ellipse that is the earth’s orbit around the sun, the earth is 91,445,000 miles (147,166,462 kms) from the sun. This point in the earth’s orbit is known as Periapsis (perihelion) and it occurs around January 3. The earth is farthest away from the sun around July 3 when it is 94,555,000 miles (152,171,522 km) from the sun. This point in the earth’s orbit is called Apoapsis (aphelion). The average distance from the earth to the sun is 92,955,807 miles (149,597,870.691 km).
According to Records, For the first time in 1672, Jean Richer and Giovanni Domenico Cassini measured the distance between Earth and Sun as 22,000 times of Earth Radii.( Earth’s Radius is 6,371 Kms).
i.e 22000 * 6371 kms = 140,162,000 kms (140 Million Kms).
Two lines of Hindu Prayer ” Hanuman Chalisa” computes this distance with great simplicity.
“! जुग सहस्त्र योजन पर भानुलील्यो ताहिमधुर फल जानू !”
This means that Sun (भानु) is at a distance of  Juug Sahastra Yojans (जुग सहस्त्र योजन- Distance Unit in Hindi)
According to following conversion practices that are in use as per Hindu Vedic Literature-
1 Juug = 12000
1 Sahastra= 1000
1 Yojan = 8 Miles
Thus
12000 X 1000 X 8 =  96,000,000  miles
1 mile = 1.6 kms
This further implies that distance is  96,000,000 * 1.6 kms = 153,600,000 Kms
Hanuman challisa was written by Goswami Tulasidas (born 15th century) in Awadhi language who belongs to 15th century. which means the distance between Sun and earth has been calculated much more accurately than the 17th century scientists even before 2 centuries.

Our practices are NOT some hard and fast rules framed by 1 man and his followers or God’s words in somebody’s dreams. All the rituals, all the practices are, in reality, well researched, studied and scientifically backed thesis which form the ways of nature to lead a good healthy life. The scientific and research part of the practices are well camouflaged as “elder’s instructions” or “granny’s teaching’s” which should be obeyed as a mark of respect so as to once again, avoid stress to the brains.
History is not presented to us in a way it should be. There are still many elements and precious jewels of information that are being kept hidden from us.Ocean of history is before you, dive in and dig the jewels out. The gleaming beam of knowledge from these jewels will not only enrich our country but will also keep bestowing direction to our future generations.
